80-MHz Channel (VHT80) Worldwide Acceptance

5.x GHz 80-MHz Channel (VHT80) Worldwide Acceptance

IEEE Std 802.11ac technology (802.11ac) is the latest technology breakthrough in WLAN market. We will definitely see more and more WLAN equipment providers quickly release new 802.11ac product lines. There are some advanced features in 802.11ac, such as high-rate modulation and wider channel, which make new 802.11ac standard more desirable in bandwidth-hungry networking environment.

All current shipped “802.11ac” devices are based on "802.11ac First Wave" design. It means the devices are capable to transmit radio signal via a contiguous 80-MHz channel (VHT80). Wider channels with even-higher bandwidth, such as contiguous 160-MHz channel bonding (VHT160) or non-contiguous 160-MHz channel bounding (VHT80+80), are both optional features in 802.11ac standards. Most key chipset partners, Broadcom, Qualcomm-Atheros Communication, Marvell, or Mediatek, all define such specification as Second-Wave 802.11ac and promise to deliver their samples to key customers around Christmas 2014 or earlier 2015.

The devices with 802.11ac capabilities will be constrained by new regulatory criteria with 80-MHz channel bonding. The channel-bonding has endorsed by lots of countries already. Applicants just need to perform addition (and more complicate tests) beyond existing 20 MHz (HT20) or 40 MHz (HT40). The following is the latest survey result in 269 countries for their acceptance/approval at 5.x GHz 80 MHz usage. In the latest survey, there were total 134 countries/territories which accept 80-MHz enabled 802.11ac devices. The survey is done on May 31, 2013, readers shall further discuss with local compliance experts if they want to import, export, or use such devices in the specific countries. Even so, the chart may be still useful for readers to quickly get a general idea of market.
